The slap, which has now reverberated around the world, shocked many at home and largely changed how millions see Smith, who would go on to win Best Actor and was considered one of Hollywood's most beloved actors. It has also painted Pinkett Smith in an unflattering light, considering her recent statement about "not giving two craps" about what people thought about her bald head, which she now keeps shaved due to alopecia.

What makes her reaction -- laughter -- especially vexing is how unreal it seems. Will Smith had just assaulted a comedian, on live TV, for cracking a relatively tame joke and found it amusing. As if it were somehow called for, appropriate, or justified. Whether it's detachment from reality or simply the shock of the moment, it's hard to say.
